Steven M. Bishop was born in San Diego, CA on October 10, 1952. He is the second of three sons born to Philip and Lil Bishop. His father was a career Marine who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Most of his life was spent in San Diego but, due to his father’s military service, he also experienced life in Hawaii (1960-63) and the Midwest (Kansas City, MO, 1967-69).
Mr. Bishop’s older brother is a software engineer and remains in Kansas City, MO with his four children. His father and younger brother remain in San Diego. His mother lived 82 wonderful years until her death in January 2007. Mr. Bishop’s brother is a professor at Palomar Community College in San Diego and is married with two sons.
Mr. Bishop attended San Diego State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in December 1973. He worked his way through college and law school as a grocery store clerk. He attended the University of San Diego Law School. He was accepted into the International Legal Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi, in September 1977.
Mr. Bishop earned his Juris Doctorate in May 1978 and was admitted to the California State Bar in November 1978. He was admitted to the United States Tax Court in November 1984. He is also a past member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Mr. Bishop is a sole practitioner. 99% of his practice is devoted to the area of San Diego family law. He brings over 30 years of experience to cases as diverse as highly contested, big income and asset cases (such as professional athletes and business and community figures), and the far less complex issues of a “friendly” divorce.
His other areas of practice include estate planning, guardianships and adoptions. Mr. Bishop believes his clients deserve to understand the process in which they are involved and takes an active role educating them to the realities of family law and the court system.
Mr. Bishop is active in the San Diego County Family Law Bar Association. He has also volunteered as a mediator for the Family Law Facilitators at the downtown Family Law Court.
In June 2007, Mr. Bishop was recognized by the Certified Family Law Specialist Committee of San Diego County with the coveted CCP §128.5 award. This award is conveyed semi-annually to only one lawyer in the entire County.
In December 2007, Mr. Bishop passed the examination for certification as a Family Law Specialist with the State Bar of California and was officially recognized as a Certified Family Law Specialist in August 2009.
Mr. Bishop is a born-again Christian. He brings strong faith-based principles to his practice. He often receives referrals from local churches and Christian counselors.
Mr. Bishop has five children (3 in college!). He is an avid sports fan and a 15 year volunteer with the La Jolla Youth Baseball League (with occasional forays into girls’ softball and recreation football, basketball and soccer). As manager of his youngest son’s team, La Jolla Pony League Baseball team, he was the only manager to win the championship for two consecutive years at the Pony Division.
